Hi Lauren,

I thing things will improve when spiritual people engage in religion talk more robustly. No more bandying! Let's stop equating passivity with piety! Why am I yelling here? Oh, my buttons are being pushed :).

Religion can be comforting--and divisive (am I profound or what?!) But I think accepting that overly simplistic view might aid in the sort of discussion that brings us to God and to the sort of community that organized religion at its best offers. Anytime I am in my home church, the church of my childhood, I feel warm and loved--shared stories, shared heritage, shared experience. The smells of old wood and old hymnals mingle with the rosy nostalgia of the good old days, and I feel God. I would posit that often, those who want to be outside, "spiritual but not religious", fear one of two things: Either they are afraid of being boxed in by dogma, afraid of losing their independence; or they have been hurt by the people, particularly those in authority, who make up that community of faith. We are human, of course, all of us, and we are going to mess up; we are going to hurt one another, both on purpose and on accident. But when God's name gets bandied about in the hurt-fest, people run. And call themselves spiritual but not religious. And both sides miss, both those "inside" and those "outside". What to do???

Samir,

It would be great if you would comment on my blog. Ha just joking, I don't advertise.

I would really like to get in contact with your daughters. But If I were you I'd give the e-mail address to your 12 year old daughter, because your teen daughter might think I am trying to get to her. lol
My e-mail is cucoanaina@hotmail.com.

Why'd you say I am cool? Just because I got the blood relationship with my dad? Hahaha!

I'll visit once in a while to talk with you. Remember I don't advertise, but I would like you to comment on my blog!

Hello Samir, I don't believe we've met yet. I am the oldest son of Florin. You may know him on Facebook and Twitter. You also might know he has a blog, like I do. (Except mine is more successful in comments). I have been dieing to see or talk to you. I heard my dad sent a comment to you (On Facebook) about my picture of your book.

Although, how does it feel to talk about religion on a book?
I may believe it is amazing. I've seen your daughter's video (On Youtube). It was hilarious!
I was thinking of putting their video on my blog to get more views and so on.

I am only 10 :)

"A growing number of us hold hybrid worldviews made, at times, from seemingly incompatible or even contradictory beliefs or practices. We do what works, because life has the power to change the rules, break the hierarchy of authority, alter the meanings of our texts, and interrupt our theologies. We cannot but honor what life insists on." Absolutely! Those of us who are interfaith children are born into "hybrid worldviews." Life, indeed, insists that we change the rules. I am guided by two superimposed but very specific and ancient itineraries. I am refreshed at pilgrimage sites found on both. As I continue to blog about interfaith families and interfaith identity at onbeingboth.com, I am radically amazed that one of the people who really "gets it" is an Adventist minister! Thank you for existing, and writing, Samir!
